In Loving Memory ~

John Schweigert was born in Hafford Saskatchewan, the only son of John and Anna Schweigert and had 3 sisters, Irene, Emma, and Doreen. The family moved to Sumas Prairie in October 1937 and began dairy farming. Johnny and the girls attended Upper Sumas Elementary School and his 1st few jobs included picking hops, beans and berries at which he excelled.

The family rented different parcels of land until they bought the Humphries-Peyton 160-acre farm on Fadden Rd in 1947. In 1949, the Rempel family moved to B.C. and also farmed a 40-acre property on Fadden Rd. In 1952, John married the girl next door, Marian Rempel. In 1957, Johnny and Marian bought both the Schweigert farm and the Rempel farms. Then Johnny and his good friend Henry Jacobs began the huge job of clearing the cottonwood trees off the property by cutting the wood into 24" blocks which they took to Scott Paper in New Westminster for $18.00 a cord. The land was cleared, the dairy herd grew and Road End Farms Inc. was born.

Johnny and Marian had 4 children: Carol, Terry, Penny and Donna who grew up on the same farm and attended the same school as their dad. Their son Terry and his family now run Road End Farms, the 5th generation of Schweigerts to be milking cows in the same location. Following in the footsteps of Sumas farming pioneers John and Anna then Johnny and Marian.

They enjoyed fishing and travelling, getting to far-away destinations including England, New Zealand, Florida and Russia and even went on cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal.

When Johnny and Marian retired from Road End Farms in 1986, they bought the 40 acre farm owned by Malcolm and Barb Hill on Wellsline Rd. There they started Granny and Grumpa's Antiques filling all of the barns with a wonderful collection of antiques. They were proud to become the largest private museum in B.C. They were the 1st stop listed on the Circle Farm Tour and were even featured in an episode of Canadian Pickers. They were warm and welcoming to thousands of visitors from around the world.

Johnny was sadly predeceased by his beautiful wife of almost 70 years, Marian, in July 2021. He was also predeceased in 1987 by Malcolm Hill who was like a son to them both. He is survived by his 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and his sister Emma.
