Peak tourism season starts soon, and local RCMP are preparing for it.

The Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment (UFVRD) is rolling out their Enhanced Policing Program to ensure safety as tourists flock to the area.

Sites like Harrison Lake and Cultus Lake are popular tourist destinations in the summer, and with the influx of tourists comes the additional need for safety and security measures.

The RCMP said they will focus on increasing their presence on the forestry service roads, local lakes and campgrounds in hopes of cracking down on impaired driving and managing disturbances and excessive noise and partying. Initial encounters with the RCMP will lead to warnings but could escalate to vehicle towing and fines.

“The Victoria Day long weekend marks the traditional start of our summer season,” the RCMP stated. “We welcome everyone to explore and enjoy the picturesque settings of our region safely and responsibly.”

The RCMP remind the public to ensure safety comes first when swimming in the local lakes. Never swim alone and ensure children are closely supervised and wearing appropriate flotation devices.

Boaters need to ensure they’re equipped with life jackets for every passenger. They must be responsible out on the water, observing speed limits and avoiding operating boats under the influence.

ATV riders should wear helmets and protective clothing and ensure they ride only in designated areas.

Impaired driving is a serious threat to public safety. As such, the RCMP are increasing checks and patrols to deter driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other substances.

“We urge all motorists to plan ahead and make safe transportation arrangements, such as designating a sober driver or utilizing local taxi services or rideshare apps,” the RCMP stated. “Let’s work together to make this summer safe and enjoyable for everyone!”
